Applied Bioscience
The Faculty of Science, in collaboration with the Faculty of Health Sciences offers graduate programs leading to the degrees of Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Bioscience. The Applied Bioscience Program is a multidisciplinary graduate program focusing on three key research areas:
- Biomolecular Science
- Ecosystem Health
- Forensic Bioscience
An Interdisciplinary Focus
Major advances in fundamental knowledge often result from interdisciplinary research approaches and collaborations. The multidisciplinary research environment underlying the Applied Bioscience program has the potential to result in important practical applications and will provide our students with a unique research perspective to foster their scientific training and outlook.
The primary objective of the Applied Bioscience graduate program is to train students to become high-quality researchers at the interface between chemistry and biology. The Faculty of Science, with no traditional departments, exposes students to interdisciplinary research, allowing them to gain experience working successfully within collaborative networks. The graduate programs equip students with awide array of both practical and conceptual scientific skills that prepares them for leadership roles in the life sciences. These goals are achieved through independent research and rigorous interdisciplinary coursework. The programs bring together students and faculty from a variety of scientific backgrounds, which further enriches the learning experience of thestudents. In keeping with UOIT's strategic plan, research is aimed atcreating innovations that will improve the lives of Canadians.
It is expected that the graduates from these programs will:
- Have a breadth of knowledge in the life sciences,
- A depth of knowledge in their chosen field, and
- The scientific and technical skills that are essential for a career in research.
It is also expected that graduates will continue to make significant contributions to the advancement of knowledge in their field and become lifelong scholars, with an appreciation of the impact of science on society.
MSc Program
The objectives of the MSc program are achieved through a combination of course work, independent research, a research seminar, and a research thesis. The expected length of time for degree completion is 24 months.
PhD Program
The objectives of the PhD program are achieved through a combination of advanced course work, independent research, research seminars, workshops, peer-reviewed publications, and a research dissertation. The research dissertation must constitute a new contribution to the field of study. The expected length of time for degree completion is 48 months.
